Fairy Foals
Suzanah
Sourcebooks Jabberwocky
Fiction, YA Picture Book
****

DESCRIPTION: When she turned 40, Suzanah inherited her grandmother's old house in the countryside, surrounded by acres of sprawling gardens. She always loved the place, but until now she never understood just how truly magical they were. Shortly after her arrival, she discovers something wonderful: a little foal with butterfly-like wings, trapped in a spiderweb. Soon, she learns that "Little Brown" isn't alone, and sets about documenting the fairy foals in her journal.

REVIEW: The primary purpose for this book is the fun illustrations, but there's a story here, too, interspersed with poems about each fairy foal Suzanah finds. The tale, centered around the undersized Little Brown, is light and sweet, perfect for a little girl in love with fairies or horses or both. The pictures, though, are clearly the selling point, rich in light and detail and color. This isn't the sort of book I'd normally buy, but it hit enough of a chord with my sense of wonder that I figured I'd kick myself if I didn't.
