Painting Wildlife Textures Step By Step
Rod Lawrence
North Light Books
Nonfiction, Art
*****

DESCRIPTION: Wild animals pose a challenge to any artist, with ranges of colors and textures that dazzle the eye. Using examples from various wildlife artists, both finished works and step-by-step tutorials, this book shows how to render various furs, feathers, scales, and such.

REVIEW: This would be even more helpful if I had a place to actually paint, but it is still a beautiful book to page through. The lessons are clear and easy to follow, with interesting and helpful notes on each subject covered. He doesn't go too far into anatomy and other aspects of building an animal from scratch on canvas; Lawrence assumes you have other training in that regard, focusing instead on the challenges of reproducing the many textures seen on animals. A gread book, nonetheless.
